Tile Floor Care: Do Not use Vinegar to Clean Your Mexican Tile Floor it
Will Ruin the Finish. Vinegar is an acid. Proper weekly maintenance is
just as important as getting the right installer in order to extend the
life of your Mexican Saltillo tile. "No Mop & Glo and no Endust, no
Spic and Span." Would you put any of these things on your car? Don't use
them on your Mexican tile." CALL 941-926-7444. email mexicantilerenew@aol.com
Mexican Tile Renew Project in Sarasota Fl Where the Use of Fabuloso and Vinegar to Clean Floor had Ruined the Finish, so we cleaned and re-stained the tile. Yes,
you can absolutely stain porous Mexican (Saltillo) tile because its
high porosity allows stains to penetrate deeply for a durable,
natural-looking color, but you must first strip any existing sealer/wax
and use specialized penetrating stains, applying thin, even coats and
sealing thoroughly afterward to prevent streaking and maintain the
finish. CALL 941-926-7444. email mexicantilerenew@aol.com

Tile Restoration of Historic Van Wezel House. Apart from the Ca d’ Zan,
no other home is town has quite the historic cachet of the Van Wezel
estate on St Armands. It was built back in 1936 by architect Thomas Reed
Martin, possibly the master architect of Sarasota’s golden age, and was
the pride and joy of the famous Van Wezels, Lewis and Eugenia—prominent
philanthropists and major donors of the performing arts hall that bears
their name.

Other details include a custom tile mosaic above the outdoor grill and
terracotta Saltillo floor tiles with original paw prints. Saltillo tiles
are known for the unique paw markings sometimes left by animals walking
across them as they dry outdoors in the Mexican sun, and according to
superstition, they bring good luck.

bedrooms are named after Albert Einstein and Brigitte Bardot, who are
rumored to have stayed in the home as guests of the Van Wezels, with
portraits of each on the walls. What was originally the home’s library
has been transformed into a moody martini bar a guest favorite. The
primary bedroom now looks onto a new pool, gathering area and
wood-burning pizza oven.

measurements wasn’t available, so getting those imperfect details right
was crucial to preserving the home’s original character.

Ringling, but Albert Einstein, Brigitte Bardot, and of course the Van
Wezel, the daughter of the family, was married to Nobel from the Nobel
Peace Prize."

serious operation at age 70, Einstein came to Sarasota to recuperate.
The year was 1950. He stayed for a month or so at a cottage on Lido
Beach and was accompanied by his secretary, Helen Dukas. He was here to
rest and that’s exactly what he did. Aside from walks on the beach and
tossing a softball to the neighborhood kids, he hardly did a thing,
other than sit in the back yard and watch the wildlife that gathered.

Tile Floors Were The Only Flooring Product to Survive Back to Back
Hurricanes Helene and Milton on Siesta Key Fl in October 2024. In
February 2026 Mexican Tile Renew continues to restore Saltillo tile
flooring on Siesta Key due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton in October
2024.
Typical
flood-damaged floors on Siesta Key from Hurricanes Helene and Milton
(2024) involved extensive water infiltration, leaving behind mud, ruined
subfloors, and soaked floor coverings. Ground-level areas, particularly
garages and lanais, saw water lines of 2-3 feet, resulting in saturated
flooring.

Efflorescence is a White Powdery Deposit Caused by Water Intrusion Under Tile Installed & Sealed on the Exterior. The white spots you see on the
Mexican tile in the before photo above is called Efflorescence which is
caused by water getting under the Mexica/Saltillo porous tile via a flood or constant
water intrusion, like nearby sprinklers at a patio.
The source of the water must be diverted or shut down.
Efflorescence is a white deposit (usually calcium carbonate) that
develops on the surface of grout and/or tiles as they dry out. It
happens when soluble, naturally occurring mineral salts contained in
Portland cement, or materials used in conjunction with it, rise to the
surface.
Efflorescence is a similar phenomenon. As cement or cement tiles dry, the lime in the cement rises to the surface with the water and reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to form calcium carbonate. In this case, a white powder or film forms on the tile's face. Efflorescence has been a problem for many years, and is a topic of much controversy. The formation of these salt deposits are not mysteries.
Efflorescence, for the most part, water-soluble salts that come from many possible sources to mar and detract from an otherwise beautiful and serviceable structure. First of all, there must be water present to dissolve and transport the salts, remove the source of water and your almost there.
